Summer 2013: Day 3

Aaron Urbas teaching about Spectroscopy

The morning was focused on light in all different colors. Aaron Urbas came in and taught about spectroscopy. The electromagnetic spectrum is amazing and spectroscopy can be used in so many areas including law enforcement, medicine and drug testing. Eight Einstein Fellows joined us as we built spectrometers using pvc pipe, paper towel rolls, diffraction grating and business cards. It was a little challenging because of some confusion in the instructions, but eventually, they were all built and the experimentation could begin. It is amazing how the spectra change depending on the light source.

The afternoon was spent with Becky Hill and Erica Butts talking about human DNA. This was followed up by our first tour of a lab! We also got to see how they do flash Electrophoresis. Science is so cool!

  1. Doing hands on activities and sharing ideas with other teachers was great. Lab time, lab time is a great way to see things in action and ask questions of scientist work

  2. Had a great time! Learned a great deal that will be useful in the classroom. THe "cheap" version of the spectrascope will be useful for my students.
